Running toilets, bidet seats and loose bars

The plumbing jobs a handyman is asked to take are the fixtures you use every day. A toilet that runs after every flush, because the fill valve or float inside the tank has worn out. A bidet seat or smart toilet that has to be installed and connected. Grab bars in a shower or beside a toilet that need to be set where they will actually hold.

These are small jobs with a way of getting bigger. A running toilet wastes water around the clock and is usually a one-part fix. A grab bar that is only screwed into tile will not do the one thing it is there for.

Across Huntsville and North Alabama, call or text 256-804-5442 with a photo of the fixture and what it is doing. That is usually enough to tell what kind of job it is.

Shut off, swap, leak-check

The order is the same every time. The water to the fixture is shut off first, so nothing is pulled apart while it is live. The old part comes out, the new one goes in, and the connections are tightened by hand and by wrench, not just by feel.

Then the leak check, which is the step that matters. The water goes back on slowly, the fixture is run, and every joint is watched and wiped dry. A drip that shows up now is cheap to fix. One that shows up in the cabinet a month later is not.

Robbie's EOD explosive-safety background is where that habit comes from: make it safe, do the work, then prove it before you leave. The area is cleaned afterwards, and the old part is gone with him.

Where handyman plumbing stops

There is a line, and Robert Owens Handyman says where it is. Fixture work is in scope: valves, seats, bars and the like. Work that falls outside the handyman scope, or that requires permitting, goes to a licensed plumber. The same applies to electrical work when a fixture needs new wiring.

When a job crosses that line, Robbie brings in a licensed partner and tells you before any work starts, not partway through. The fixture finish work can stay with him while the licensed work goes to the right trade.

Not sure which side of the line your job is on? Call or text 256-804-5442 and describe it. If it is not ours, we will say so.
